The Student Involvement Fair is being held today from 3:00-6:00pm! First-year students in particular should consider attending this event on Zoom. Links for 80+ organizations were emailed yesterday. Student organizations remain active during this time, and you have many opportunities to get engaged in a variety of activities.

  • MELT Mentee Recruitment continues! First-year students looking for support transitioning into JCU or just looking to connect with a current student can register for the program here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdmohQUsmNc6J-Znwh8r76TpoSPVCrK8UGdrnQlg5d7IT8ULg/viewform

    • The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion invites all first-year students to sign up for the MELT mentoring program. The purpose of MELT (Match, Empower, Learn, and Teach) is to create a caring mentoring partnership between mentors (current sophomores, juniors, and seniors) and mentees (first-year students who are the first in their immediate families to go to college, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and other historically underrepresented students). 

  • Faculty can also reach out to the Center if they'd like to recommend students to the program (csdi@jcu.edu). 

Where can I go if I need good internet access or a computer for courses?

The Rec/Plex is open to students from 7:00am-9:00pm, and we encourage students to use the LSC Conference Room and the Jardine Room if they need  a quiet place to Zoom into their class.  The computer lab in the Rec/Plex is also open for student use.

The previous point serves as a reminder that campus is NOT closed to students.

JCU Writing Center (thanks to Maria Soriano Young)

The JCU Writing Center (JCU Writing Center) is available in a virtual format for all writers at the University, offering both synchronous (live Zoom sessions) or asynchronous (Google Docs review) options. Consultants are available on the following days and times:

Monday-Thursday, 9:00am-5:00pm

Friday, 9:00am-2:00pm

Students can easily request an appointment using this Google Form link, and faculty are encouraged to add the Google Form link to their Canvas sites.

Grasselli Library (thanks to Michelle Millet):

  • Digital Textbook Sharing is the Library's brand-new controlled digital lending program. Launching on Monday, September 21, this program will be modeled after the “in-person” Textbook Sharing Program you know and love! This new and exciting offering allows you to electronically check out selected Textbooks for 2 hours at a time. You will not be able to print or download these files. The continuously updated list of items is posted here: https://researchguides.jcu.edu/textbooksharing/digital

Call the Library (216-397-4233), send an email (circulation@jcu.edu), chat through the Library's website, or just stop at the Library’s Help Desk to check out these items. If an item is currently checked out, the Library will add your name to the hold list and contact you when the item is once again available.

  • The Library Help Desk is offering contactless pick-up for students (as well as faculty and staff) who live close enough to use the Library but would prefer to avoid even distanced interactions. Just email circulation@jcu.edu to arrange a time to pick up the books you would like to check out, and the Library staff will get that together for you.

JCU’s Counseling Center remains more committed than ever to supporting our new and returning students during these challenging times. We recognize that many of you may be struggling with anxiety, grief, sadness, confusion, loneliness and other difficulties in the midst of navigating a global health pandemic, financial hardships, increased social disconnection, and continued racial injustice and unrest. Whatever struggles you may be experiencing, and regardless of how and where you’ll be learning this semester, the Counseling Center is here to help.
